Diary of The Life of a Trainer when Injured

This is probably the most dreaded thing of any Health and Fitness Coach or Trainer. And, it's the one thing that can really "break" us.

Trainers are usually unstoppable, highly motivated, inspiring, very positive, and happy. Ha! Actually those things are usually pre-requisites. Being all those things is the nature of our job.

But, what are we to do without our health, both physically and emotionally? What is to happen to our livelihood when we are injured? How can we demonstrate exercises, how can we teach others proper form? How can we continue to work and earn our living? How can we possibly motivate and inspire others?

These are all thoughts that cross a trainers mind I'm sure, and then some. At least, these are the thoughts that have crossed my mind since I recently became injured; Someway, somehow, I have hurt my knee. In fact its not even my knee, but a muscle that is not allowing my knee to properly extend or flex. I am literally not able to walk without dragging my hurt leg at the speed of 1 step per 1.5 seconds or so. This is the first time I am unable to demonstrate exercises for my students. Normally when a sport injury has occurred, I recover real quickly, specially because i always see my sports therapist and chiropractors right away. I don't mess around.

This time, it's been 3 days since my injury and it hasn't gotten any better; even after seeing my sports therapist, Electro Magnetic Pulse Therapy practitioner, and Chiropractor. One of my docs. mentioned if by Monday, since i was treated on a Friday, I didn't get any better, I would have to do an MRI.

I was hoping that it wouldn't go that far, instead heal right away like it normally would. But, that does not seem to be the case this time around.

These past few days I haven't been my upbeat self. I have to admit, I've been through certain emotions of sadness, depression, anger, and even moody. However, it's so interesting that someway my true loving nature pops up and says "maybe this happened because you are supposed to learn more compassion", "maybe this is a way to learn to let go of attachments, expectations, and the ego".

Perspective is EVERYTHING...

You see, all those thoughts that have crossed my mind, like: "OMG, how am I going to work now?" "How am I going to inspire and motivate my students" "I have a huge event coming up where I am the main attraction and what will these people think of me now?", are all part of the ego**. These things are only existing in my mind! I am creating a problem that really doesn't exist. The "real" reality is that: I am injured at the moment- that's it! Anything else that I attach to it is not real.

The solution is really to stay in the present moment. Live every moment as it comes. And have a more positive outlook and perspective.

After meditation this morning, my "light bulb" lit up. It said, call Sean ( a trainer friend of mine) and see if he can do the exercise demos for your students. So I contacted him, and he said he would, "No problem". So as my body is healing itself, I will simply have to use other alternatives for teaching. Until, eventually, I will be able to teach again on my own.

So if you are injured, work around that injury, do what you can, and try not to "get stuck in your head". Don't forget, they are just thoughts, and the negative thoughts that you attach to what is actually happening, are your only limitations. Your thoughts do create the "reality" that you are experiencing, so make them positive if you are going to think.

Buddha once said, " We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thougths, we make the world."

If you are an injured trainer, hire someone or ask a friend to help you. Also, you can Look at this as a way of getting more creative, aquiring patience, developing compassion, and many other great things. Perspective is everything.

With love, inspiration, and light,

Coach Yari

P.S. Everything happens for a reason. These are all learning experiences for growth and awareness.

The Story I NEVER told you about my "Obsession"

The topic of nutrition can be quite a controversy! It can be so confusing because one expert says one thing and the other one says something completely different. Who do you believe?

I can sit here and tell you to “Listen to your body” to know what, when, and how much too eat. But, funny enough, you would probably find that too vague, and not know what to do. So, no problem, that’s what I’m here for: To guide and teach you on one of the most confusing topics that exists!

Luckily for you, I'm "obsessed"...

I breathe, dream, eat, read, write, and live the nutrition topic everyday of my life. There are definitely huge motivational factors for me becoming so interested in what foods work best for the body. Some might call it an obsession, but for me it’s like a puzzle I was born to figure out, so I can guide others in the right direction to achieve their best body and peak health!

The 2 Motivational factors for my for nutrition "Obsession" (although I would refer to it as my Passion instead )

Motivational Factor # 1: Stomachaches:

I remember being in school as early as kindergarten and experiencing the worst stomachaches of my life. My poor mom would have to come to my school from work to pick me up because I had some diarrhea or vomiting or just in a lot of pain. She would take me to doctors, and they wouldn’t find anything wrong.

It wasn’t till about 15 years of age that we discovered I was lactose intolerant! I kind of laugh about it now, because my mom used to feed me grilled cheese sandwiches most mornings and milk before I went to bed-Go figure!

I continued to have many other stomachaches and at about 19 years old (I had done my first fitness competition and became a personal trainer) I went to a specialist, a gastroenterologist. He diagnosed me with IBS, irritable bowel syndrome-what a nightmare! Then he gave me some pills. It helped, but I was never just fine, although I had learned to live with it. The pills later lost their effect, so I had to take more of them with more frequency.
I was sick and tired of these stomach problems that seemed to be taking a hold of my life, so I was motivated and inspired to find answers and seek alternatives.

Motivational Factor # 2: Insecurity

As a kid growing up in Puerto Rico, I was a little bright shining star! Everyone loved me and I loved everyone. I was also super smart – teachers wanted to skip me grades. And boys loved me since I was in pre-school; I probably had a boyfriend since I was 3. Ha-ha!

When I was about 6 and a half, I took a big turn.

I moved to Stuart, Florida with my mom and my older brother into a home with my new “Dad”. That was a big change since I didn’t know the language, and difficulties started to present themselves. Later, my Dad was transferred to another job in Tennessee. And there, I was faced with many more challenges because I was different; I didn't have the blond hair and blue eyes. To many I was considered “ugly” –being they told it to my face. Thats ok, they just didn't know any better.

Looks then started to become important!

But don’t worry; it all took a turn in a positive direction. I’m grateful for this to have happened to me, and truthfully not angry about it at all. Now you can understand why initially this was a motivational factor in becoming who I am today.

Thankfully I’ve discovered my beauty from the inside out, so health is more of my focus, physical appearance is the by-product. ;)

Moreover, with the things that have happened in my life I can help you with the utmost accuracy to achieve your dream body and the best health!

I Won!...

I won...

...A heck of a lot of things out of this competition!

Even though I did not "Win" in the competition, I still feel like I won. I will tell you what I Won in a brief moment, but I must say a few things before I get to that part.

First of all, I went into this fitness modeling competition with a whole different outlook -- I could have sworn I didn't have to be so muscular. I thought it would be much more of a "soft look". I thought I would of had this hands down because I have a fit physique, confidence, energy, pizazz, and a bright happy smile. Ha-Ha...

Boy, did I learn that it was not the case! I was in the wrong competition if I was planning on winning 1st place.

Man, most of these girls were lean, ripped, full 6 pack abs, around 9% body fat. They were like I was for the first ever competition I did at 19 years old- sickly in shape! I had placed 2nd in this one.

This was me before and after in only 11 weeks time (the before is on the upper right at 103lbs and the afters are the others at 99lbs). I literally KILLED myself to look the way I did because it was such a short period of time-exactly the reason why I put on almost 20 lbs in just 3 months time after the competition, the heaviest and most uncomfortable I'd ever been.(This is why I don't teach my student Quick fixes, the quicker it is, the more imbalance it causes and the shorter it is lived!!!!!)

I seriously began to develop an eating disorder. I just wanted to eat and eat because I was so deprived for 11 straight weeks. It took me some time to get out of that mental hole, that obsession with appearance and the concern with how much my body fat percentage was. While at the same time, the reasons why I competed were pretty negative too, which makes sense as to why these negative outcomes were happening.

Back then I wanted to compete because I had a low self esteem and I thought that by accomplishing this great hard body I would overcome it. But, of course, I didn't understand this at the time. I understood later. That was completely different from why I wanted to compete now.

This time I wanted to compete because of the business sense it makes, because of the exposure, and for pure fun. This time I was ready to do it coming from a healthy place spiritually and mentally.

At the same time, that 2001 competition served me in a lot of ways. I don't regret doing it because it taught me a great deal on how to train, what it feels like to workout that hard, how proper form is done, discipline , time management, focus, and mental preparation.

And now, this very recent fitness modeling competition taught me lots of things I didn't expect.

So let me tell you what I WON in the UFE Canada Comp this past Saturday:

1. A new perspective on fitness modeling-much effort and constant dieting are involved. I know because I've already experienced looking like that.

2. I learned that I wasn't attached to the "1st Place Winner" outcome. -that's awesome!

3. I now know what I need in order to win- a lot more than personality, attractiveness, and stage presence. (I got the highest points for that). I gotta just get more muscle on and get really lean.

4. Fitness Modeling is not something I want to pursue as a career, but I would love to do it as a compliment to my career.

5. It reassures me that I am in the right mind when I teach being healthy and fit as a lifestyle and not a short lasting event.

Overall I Won a deep sense of understanding, which to me is much more of value than a trophy.

But, I did do pretty good, and I am super proud! I actually placed top 10 in both bikini and fitness. I got 7th in one and 5th in the fitness modeling out of 15+ girls. Not bad at all when my body didn't even compare! For the next one I do, if I decide to do it, I just have to work on the body-the easier part, charisma would be a much harder thing to work on if you don't have it, but anything can be done. I will be posting a video clip of it soon and more pics so you can see the other girls. Here is a pic from the photo shoot I took at the competition:

(the girl who won is right next to me in the purple....that's what they were looking for)

P.S. I had a great time in Canada with my family and the people there were awesome!!!

P.S.S. Once again, I can't thank you guys enough for all your support!!! You are all Amazing people!

As always, I say, whatever you put your mind on you can do. Follow your dreams. Keep going! You can do it!! Don't be afraid to experience, that is one of the best ways to learn.

Lots of Love,

Coach Yari
